Cal had a field trip to the zoo with his class and they had a great time. 

Kate performed at the last PTA meeting of the year and got to play a musical instrument.

Cal moved into the Bear rank as a cub scout and they were in the Armed Services parade here in Floresville. 

Kate and Cal both had an end of the school picnic/party for them having finished 5000 books for the whole school.

We finished up another great year with the Kangaroos and Coach Garcia!

Kate had her “birthday” at school and she decorated the cupcakes herself.

The kids both received awards at AWANA and Cal moved into Truth and Training – Kate is on her last year of Sparks. 

We all got up early to wave and cheer on the Wounded Warriors from BAMC on their way to the coast for family fishing.

…and the Dallas family came to town and we got to spend a great evening with them at Goomba’s and Amy’s Ice Cream.

Mom had a business trip the last week of school and so missed many of the activities, but some other moms took a few pics for her – thank goodness!

We started out with an Easter Egg hunt at school.  Kate’s best friend Cambria lives about a block from school and so hey had their Easter Egg hunt there.  We all walked over and had refreshments and a great hunt.

The kids decorated eggs at our house that Saturday night – they were awesome as always. 

This year we were invited to a Fiesta Party on the river at the Weston Centre.  It was an AWESOME party and then we had front row seats for the River Parade.  They had food, balloon artists and face painters!

In celebration of Fiesta – the first graders each made “floats” and had their own Fiesta parade through the Primary school – the 2nd graders and parents cheered them on!

This year for Admin Prof’s Day, I did a Fiesta themed luncheon – I know cliche’ for April in South Texas, but strangely I’ve never done that theme before!  We had taco salad, chips and mango salsa, Mexican Lemonade and Pecan Praline ice cream!

It was a windy spring so Cal, Chris, Kate and I took the kites out flying – we had some success with Barbie, but not so much with the real chinese kite from San Francisco – go figure.

Cal began his Peanut Festival duties with the BBQ fundraiser.  They worked hard packing up that chicken and cookies!

Spring Break!

Over spring break this year we decided to go camping.  We wanted to go somewhere none of us had really been.  So we picked the Davis Mountain State Park in Fort Davis, Texas.

It’s about a 7 hour drive from Floresville.  We arrived there around 2pm and started setting up camp.  The park rangers are extremely helpful and check-in was a breeze.  You definitely have to reserve these spots early!  The park was completely full the whole week.  The park is nestled in a canyon of the Davis Mountains and the views were spectacular.  Included in this park is the Indian Lodge State Park (next review).

The sites were very nice – we had a water only site.  They were a bit rocky for my tastes, but since we had air mattresses that didn’t bother us at all – but something to think about.  The bathrooms were in VERY good shape and we did manage showers in this one where the water was warm.

That is important because it can get VERY cold here at night.  The first night we were there it was 18 degrees, the next night a balmy 24.  But during the day it hit 70 and was gorgeous!

Nice (although very rocky) hiking trails in this park – we made it half-way up one and then came on back down.

I would definitely stay here again and I would definitely recommend it for others.

While we were there we went to the McDonald Observatory Star Party – very cold and VERY WORTH IT!  Awesome experience…really enjoyed it!  We also saw the Fort Davis Historical Site where the kids earned another Junior Ranger Badge – they love that.

When we left the area, we drove up and went through Balmorhea and saw the spring fed pool (with catfish and turtles in it!).  The kids so want to go back there when it’s warmer.  We worked our ay thorugh Pecos and made our way to Monahans and “SURFED THE SANDDUNES!” Lots of fun.  We had a wonderful meal with the Thomas’ in Midland and spent the night with them before heading back home.

It was a GREAT spring break!

CUB SCOUTS, SOCCER and TUMBLING

The cub scouts helped do the pledge at a city council meeting, the kids are heavy into their spring soccer season with the Kangaroos and Kate participated in her second gymnastics meet and had a great day!

David can’t pass up the opportunity to advertise Texas Tech ever – so well – yep – he bought shirts for both Cal and Kate’s class….the kids loved them!

That week we also got free tickets to the Spurs – we’ve never been.  It was a lot of fun.  The kids favorite part?  The golf cart ride that the parking lot attendant WONDERFULLY gave us to our car!  He was a life-saver and could easily get a job in racing!  ;-0

On March 6, Kate participated in her first ever gymnastics meet in Pleasanton, Texas at Lone Star Gym where she takes.  Kate is a level 1 (which is basically a beginner), but should be moving to level 2 this summer.

After the meet, we also found our first ever geo-cache and we had to take a picture of course!

Later that evening Grandma and Bucko came in and we went and ate at the Hard Rock on the River (kid’s choice) and believe it or not – it was FREEZING!  We scrambled to find heaters to sit by!  They were here for a conference, so we didn’t get to see them much, but enjoyed the meal and the visit.

The ordering is a little confusing – there are no bells and whistles here…there are like 6 things on the menu and well, that’s it!  Strangely the kids both got nachos.  David and I both got hamburgers – YUM-O!!  Very good. 

Decor is biker dive with t-shirts everywhere that people have brought in and signed…you can see random names you actually recognize and of course lots of names of political candidates.

Kate’s valentine party was also at school that day – lots of fun!   I also made cupcakes for the school board meeting – they came out pretty cute and I used the new cupcake holder that mom got me for christmas!
